Cybersecurity services · Edmonton
Cybersecurity services protect your business from ransomware, email fraud and data breaches by securing your network, devices, accounts, email and backups, and by watching for trouble around the clock. AlphaIT puts those layers in place and manages them for Edmonton offices that don’t have their own security team.

The risk for Canadian businesses
Yes. Statistics Canada found that about 1 in 6 Canadian businesses was hit by a cyber security incident in 2023, and that half of those incidents were scams and fraud, not sophisticated hacking. Ransomware hit 13% of the affected businesses, up from 11% in 2021.
Most attacks on small offices are opportunistic: a reused password, an unpatched firewall, a convincing fake invoice. That’s good news, because the same handful of controls stops most of them.

What’s included
Security isn’t one product. These are the layers we put in place and manage. Each links to the full details.
Business firewalls, secure remote access and VPN, patched and monitored 24/7.
SentinelOne or Sophos on every computer and server, with alerts watched around the clock.
Phishing and invoice-fraud protection, plus SPF, DKIM and DMARC on your domain.
Multifactor authentication, secure sign-in settings and admin accounts locked down.
Immutable off-site copies stored in Canada, with restore testing.
Staff, guests, servers, cameras and phones on separate networks so one problem can't spread.
Short, regular training and simulated phishing so staff spot and report attacks.
Clear rules on which AI tools staff can use and what data must never go into them.
Containment, recovery and coordination with your insurer and specialists if something gets through.
Built on Canadian guidance
The Canadian Centre for Cyber Security publishes 13 baseline controls for organizations with fewer than 499 employees, designed to give 80% of the benefit for 20% of the effort. This is how our services line up with each one.
| Baseline control | What AlphaIT does | Details |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Incident response plan | One number to call, plus help containing, restoring and working with your insurer | FAQ below |
| 2. Automatic patching | Operating system, application and firewall updates, managed and verified | Managed IT |
| 3. Security software | Endpoint protection and DNS filtering, monitored 24/7 | Firewall & Network Security |
| 4. Secure device configuration | Default passwords changed, unneeded features off, admin rights removed | Managed IT |
| 5. Strong user authentication | MFA on Microsoft 365, email, remote access and admin accounts | Microsoft 365 |
| 6. Employee awareness training | Phishing simulations and short training sessions | Email Security |
| 7. Backup and encrypt data | Encrypted, immutable backups stored in Canada, restore-tested | Backup & DR |
| 8. Secure mobility | Company laptops and phones encrypted, and lockable or wipeable if lost | Microsoft 365 |
| 9. Basic perimeter defences | Business firewall, secure VPN, separated guest Wi-Fi | Firewall & Network Security |
| 10. Secure cloud & outsourced IT | Microsoft 365 and cloud services configured securely; vendor access controlled | Microsoft 365 |
| 11. Secure websites | Website hosting, updates and SSL handled by our web team | Web Development |
| 12. Access control | Least privilege: staff only get the access their job needs | Managed IT |
| 13. Secure portable media | Rules and settings for USB drives and other removable media | Managed IT |
The Cyber Centre suggests starting with four: an incident response plan, automatic patching, strong authentication and backups. If you do nothing else this year, do those. Aligning with these controls is good practice; it isn’t a certification.
Privacy obligations
A breach isn’t only an IT problem. Depending on your business, Alberta or federal privacy law may require you to report it. Firewall logs, endpoint monitoring and tested backups are what let you answer the first questions quickly: what was accessed, when, and whether data left the building.
Dental clinics have their own rules; see our IT support for dental clinics.
AlphaIT provides IT services, not legal advice. Confirm your obligations with a lawyer or the Commissioner’s office.
| Your business | Law | If there’s a breach |
|---|---|---|
| Most Alberta businesses: law, accounting, trades, retail, professional offices | Alberta PIPA | Notify Alberta’s Privacy Commissioner without unreasonable delay when a breach creates a real risk of significant harm. |
| Dental and medical clinics (health custodians) | Alberta Health Information Act (HIA) | Notify the Commissioner, the Minister of Health and affected individuals as soon as practicable when there is a risk of harm. |
| Federally regulated businesses, or personal information crossing provincial borders | Federal PIPEDA | Report to the federal Privacy Commissioner and notify individuals when there is a real risk of significant harm, and keep a record of every breach for two years. |

Two quick wins
Turning on multifactor authentication is the single biggest step most small offices can take: Microsoft’s research found it cut the risk of account compromise by over 99%. Yet many businesses still rely on passwords alone for email and remote access.
Training is the other gap. Fewer than a quarter of Canadian businesses train their staff, even though scams and fraud are the most common way businesses are hit. We set up both. See Microsoft 365 security and phishing training.
Cyber insurance
Only about 1 in 5 Canadian small businesses carries cyber insurance. Those that apply face detailed security questionnaires, and answering “yes” to a control you don’t actually have can put a claim at risk.
We help you answer accurately, close the gaps first, and keep the evidence your insurer may ask for.
How we work
Understand where you’re exposed before buying more tools, then fix what matters in the right order.

Who we protect
Security follows how your business works and what you’re responsible for protecting.
Patient records under the Health Information Act, imaging systems and front-desk PCs.
Client files, trust accounts and payment requests that fraudsters try to intercept.
Laptops and phones in the field, remote site access and supplier payments.
Microsoft 365, shared files and staff who work from home.
Why AlphaIT
Security works best when the people who secure your systems also manage them day to day. Our engineers hold Cisco CCNA and CCNP Switch certifications and design firewalls, Wi-Fi, Microsoft 365 and backups to work together, so nothing is left half-configured between vendors.
We’re vendor-neutral, we keep your backups in Canada, and we’re local: we can sit down with your team for training instead of sending a video link.

Frequently asked questions
Straight answers for small businesses deciding how to protect themselves.
Cybersecurity services are the ongoing work of protecting a business’s network, computers, accounts, email and data: installing and managing firewalls and endpoint protection, enforcing MFA, securing email, backing up data, training staff, monitoring for threats and helping you recover if something gets through.
No. Statistics Canada found that about 1 in 6 Canadian businesses was impacted by a cyber security incident in 2023, and half of those incidents were scams and fraud. Most attacks are opportunistic, so small offices with weak passwords or unpatched systems are easy targets.

With the four measures Canada’s Cyber Centre recommends first: an incident response plan, automatic patching, strong authentication such as MFA, and backups. Those close the most common gaps for the least effort.
Yes. Microsoft’s research found MFA lowered the risk of account compromise by 99.22%. The Cyber Centre recommends two-factor authentication wherever possible, and especially on email, cloud, financial and administrator accounts.
Yes. Our managed security includes 24/7 monitoring of firewall and endpoint alerts, with our team handling issues and escalating anything serious to you.
Yes. Insurance questionnaires commonly ask about MFA, endpoint protection, backups, patching, training and incident response. We help you answer accurately and close any gaps before you apply or renew.
Call us first. We help contain the incident, restore systems and preserve the logs you’ll need. Depending on your business, Alberta’s PIPA or Health Information Act, or federal PIPEDA, may require you to report the breach. We provide IT services, not legal advice, and we work alongside your insurer, lawyer and forensic specialists.
No IT provider can make a business compliant on its own. Compliance also depends on your policies and practices. We put the technical safeguards in place, aligned with the Cyber Centre’s baseline controls, and document them so you can show what’s in place.
Off-site backups are stored in Canadian data centres, with immutable copies that ransomware can’t change or delete. See our backup and disaster recovery page for the details.
